Welcome! is a fond re-creation of the Welcome2 program that used MacInTalk. (The name of the original author would be greatly appreciated.) It requires Apple’s Speech Manager, and fails gracefully if it is not present.
It lists all installed voices in the "Voices" menu. You can choose which voice you want Welcome! to use in the future by selecting one. If you don't select any, it defaults to either "Female Voice", if available, or the last voice installed, if not. If you choose one of the "Macintalk Voices", which use much less memory, you can change the memory required down to about 75K. Version 1.3.2 is a bug-fix, which fixes the ==/= bug that made it Thanksgiving all week (this one manifested at a job interview :-) ) and adds Halloween (no, I don't know how I missed it the first time. :-( )
To stop it in the middle, press the mouse button somewhere other than the menu bar or press any non-modifier key (not shift, option, etc.).
If you do not already have the Speech Manager, it can be obtained from ftp.apple.com, in the /dts/mac/sys.soft/speech directory, and possibly other places by now.
The source code is supplied, in case you want to clean it up for your own use or see how I did it. Please do not distribute modified copies. This version, 1.3.2, is postcardware -- later versions may be shareware. Send your cards and comments to:
